Frequently Asked Questions

  • When will I be advised?

Students will start receiving communications from academic advising after completing the necessary academic pre-enrollment steps, which include registering for Blazer Beginnings, completing the required online modules in Canvas, and submitting their Pre-Registration Advising Questionnaire. Students who do not complete the orientation modules and Pre-Registration Advising Questionnaire will be advised at Blazer Beginnings.

  • How will I be advised?

Pre-Orientation advising is primarily conducted via email for one-on-one communications and virtual group sessions for general registration assistance.

  • What are the benefits of being advised prior to attending Orientation?

Early academic advising and course registration can increase the likelihood of creating your ideal first-semester schedule. By registering early, you’ll know what your fall semester looks like in advance of attending Blazer Beginnings Orientation. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience and events of your in-person Blazer Beginnings Orientation session without the added stress of course registration.

  • When will I register for courses?

Students may register for their courses after they receive their first semester course plan from their VMASC Advisor. Full registration access will be available immediately.

Students who have not registered for classes before attending orientation, as well as those with questions about their class schedule, will be able to register or make adjustments to their schedule on Day 2 of Blazer Beginnings.

  • How will my AP/IB/CLEP scores equate to UAB credit?

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions maintains a table of the UAB credit you may receive for high scores on Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.

Be sure to request that the testing agency send official AP/IB credit directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The AP code for UAB is 1856.

  • How will courses I’ve taken at other institutions equate to courses at UAB?

Consult the Transfer Equivalency Database provided by the University Registrar.

Be sure to submit official, sealed transcripts for all college coursework completed at previous institutions to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

  • What happens if I don’t attend Blazer Beginnings Orientation after I am registered for classes?

Students who pre-registered for classes but do not attend on their orientation date will be dropped from their class schedule by the Registrar if no attempt to contact New Student Programs is made within 14 days of the missed orientation date.

  • What if I have questions about advising before my orientation session?

The majority of academic advising questions will be answered throughout the orientation modules and various sessions. All newly admitted students will have time to meet with their academic advisor on the 2nd day of their scheduled orientation session.

Academic Advisors provide course recommendations to students who have satisfied their pre-orientation requirements of the university.
